Denial

Denial is avoiding the awareness of some painful aspect of reality by negating sensory data. Although repressionIn repression, the person is expelling or withholding an idea or feeling from the consciousness ... defends against affects and drive derivatives, denial abolishes external reality. It may be used in both normal and pathological states (Sadock, 2003).
