Day After Day presents a world map based on coverage of 'victimIn different sciences the term victim has different meanings. The term is most often use in criminology, religion, psychotherapy and New Age context ...'-related news. On this map, those countries whose victimsIn different sciences the term victim has different meanings. The term is most often use in criminology, religion, psychotherapy and New Age context ... produce the highest resonance in the news media appear the most prominent, while those that do not make the news gradually disappear from sight.
The map operates on a custom made system that retrieves, chooses and classifies news items from several international newspapers on a daily basis.
As imperfect as this system may be, the resulting cartography, a map full of voids, is not indicating that these empty areas are places free of conflict - and hence free of victimsIn different sciences the term victim has different meanings. The term is most often use in criminology, religion, psychotherapy and New Age context .... On the contrary, these empty spaces rather give faith to the many biases of news media because it seems that even when it comes to counting disgraces some victimsIn different sciences the term victim has different meanings. The term is most often use in criminology, religion, psychotherapy and New Age context ... are more worthy than others.
Discussion
The project is powerful. One of the thoughts I had is that we focus on human victimsIn different sciences the term victim has different meanings. The term is most often use in criminology, religion, psychotherapy and New Age context ... of disasters although there are other life forms that are victimsIn different sciences the term victim has different meanings. The term is most often use in criminology, religion, psychotherapy and New Age context .... Are the only victimsIn different sciences the term victim has different meanings. The term is most often use in criminology, religion, psychotherapy and New Age context ... that matter human ? As we look at the ecological catastrophe threatening the earth, there is much discussion how the extinction of species threatens the web of life that makes human life possible. Human victimsIn different sciences the term victim has different meanings. The term is most often use in criminology, religion, psychotherapy and New Age context ... already are voiceless. Non human ones are invisible. Is it possible to create a life enhancing society that doesnt respect the web of life ?
Roger, I agree with your comments. In my view respect for each other also means respect for any other element that is part of the world we live in. As you said, there is a web of life, that is not only human-like, and whose presence sustains and enables our own life. Destroying, attacking, or ignoring this other living forms is by extension a way to hurt the future of human life. So even if our interest were only that of self-preservation the caring for other forms of life is a vital need.
The pattern displayed by your project is interesting and lends itself to further analysis. Why the empty spaces? Why the repetitive coverage? Nice work!
